High-Performance Gas Detection: The Science Behind the N.E.T. Premium Line Electrochemical Cells

In the rigorous landscape of industrial safety, the accuracy of Gas detection is not merely a technical requirement, it is a critical safety mandate. While electrochemical technology is a global standard for toxic Gas sensing, it often faces challenges regarding environmental cross-sensitivity, consumption rates, and thermal stability.

At N.E.T., we address these technical hurdles through our Premium Line, a range of electrochemical cells engineered to exceed the performance benchmarks of EN 45544-2.

Understanding Electrochemical Sensing Technology

Electrochemical sensors operate as micro-fuel cells. When a target Gas reaches the sensing electrode, a chemical reaction (oxidation or reduction) occurs, generating a current proportional to the Gas concentration.

However, standard sensors often suffer from two primary technical drawbacks:

  1. Cross-Sensitivity: The presence of interference Gases can lead to false positives.
  2. Depletion: The sensor is consumed by the target Gas over time, especially in environments with a constant baseline presence of the Gas, leading to frequent replacement and calibration.

The N.E.T. Premium Line: Engineered for Stability

Manufactured in Japan exclusively under N.E.T. specifications, the Premium Line is designed for manufacturers of fixed and portable detectors who require superior stability and long-term reliability.

Technical Advantages:

  • Compliance with EN 45544-2: Our cells meet exact specifications for measurement limits, deviation in clean air/test Gas, and response/recovery times
  • 3-Year Expected Lifetime: Unlike standard cells that degrade quickly, the Premium Line offers a 3-year operational life, significantly reducing the total cost of ownership.
  • Mitigating Cross-Sensitivity: A clear example is our Ammonia NH3 sensor. While most sensors on the market show increased readings in the presence of Hydrogen Sulfide H2S N.E.T. sensors maintain a negative response.
  • Extreme Thermal Resistance: Environmental factors typically affect sensitivity and baseline stability. Our H2S -HT cell is unique in the industry, maintaining performance within an expanded range of -40°C to +65°C.

The range includes specialized sensors for O2, CO, NO2, NO, H2S, NH3 (available in 4 different ranges) Cl2, Ethylene, Formaldehyde, Hydrogen Peroxide, and the new H2S -HT and CO-HT cell for high temperatures.

Integration and Intelligence: The CYBER Transmitter Board

N.E.T. provides the CYBER Transmitter Board. This microprocessor-driven interface transforms an electrochemical cell into a complete digital detector.

  • Signal Processing: CYBER linearizes and processes signals into standard analogue and digital Modbus outputs, simplifying integration with PLCs and monitoring systems.
  • Plug-and-Play Calibration: The combination of a Premium Line sensor and CYBER board arrives as a pre-calibrated unit. Users no longer need to handle low-level signal acquisition or complex field calibrations.
  • Comprehensive Monitoring: The included CYBER software allows for real-time plotting of readings, alarm threshold adjustment, and verification of the sensor’s remaining lifetime.

Certified Protection: N.E.T. Enclosures and Detection Heads

For seamless field deployment, N.E.T. offers ATEX/IECEx certified detection heads, allowing manufacturers to bypass the costly and time-consuming process of certifying their own housings.

  • NET2X and NETC2: Fully sealed, ready-to-use units designed for 20mm (4-series) sensors.
  • NET3X and NETC3: A two-piece design that accommodates 20mm or 32mm sensors alongside the CYBER transmitter. The modular design allows for field-replaceable sensors, ensuring the housing remains intact while the sensing element is updated.

Available with ¾”, 1”, or M20 threads, these enclosures provide a robust, certified solution for any industrial environment.

By combining the 3-year longevity of the Premium Line electrochemical cells with the intelligence of CYBER electronics and the security of certified enclosures, N.E.T. provides a complete, high-tier ecosystem for Gas detection.
